My two cents – Tampa at Atlanta

Posted by talkingthrash on November 20, 2007

These Thrashers are raising my blood pressure to unhealthy levels.

Pretty exciting game tonight. I thought after the 1st were going to have a great night, but the wheels sort of fell off a bit there in the 2nd. Luckily we had a little more Kovy/Hossa magic action. It almost seems like Kovy has gotten in the psyche of Tampa a bit–even when they are up by 2 or 3 goals with a few minutes left, he still manages to come back and make them pay. Its awesome. I’m certainly not complaining.

I was happy with the effort of our guys for the whole night, save a few minutes there in the 2nd. We really have done a much better job of possessing the puck and challenging our opponent at the blue line. I am soo much happier with Klee and Havelid paired up–they really look much better together than they did with Ex and Zhitnik, respectively. Enstrom continues to be our best D-man on the ice. While he did get deked on the St. Louis goal, he absolutely saved the game early in OT when he stripped LeCavalier. He plays with such a quiet confidence, it is hard to believe he is so young.

Moose had a solid game, though not totally spectacular. I still say he is our #1 goalie until Kari gets better. I do think he needs a rest after every 2 or 3 games though, so I’m glad we have a solid backup in the Kid.

I don’t know what it is about this season, but I never panic, even when we are down a few in the 3rd. They have been able to make so many good comebacks this year. It really is amazing. Now, I’d love it if we weren’t in the position to have to come back in the first place, but it seems we play our best hockey when our backs are against the wall.

Kovy and Hossa are on a hell of a streak. Hossa seemed to be all over the ice, and when he wasn’t making a play, he was drawing a crowd (which allowed White to score that OT goal so easily). And Hossa had a sick pass to Little in the 3rd–you can’t pass it any better than that. (Little had a great goal, but for most of the game he seemed to have a case of the Jimmy Slater–skate really well but can’t handle the puck).

You just can’t say enough about Kovy. Who else is going to tie the game up with minutes left, especially against Tampa? That goal was exactly why Hossa and Kovy should be on the same line with the game on the line.

I thought the Larsen/Dupuis line looked great – I’m not going to call it the Holik line, more on that in a minute. Whenever we needed a spark in the first two, they went out there and gave it to them. Dupuis’ move to free up the puck on the first goal was classic. It was as if he was 5 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier. That line is scrappy, that is why they are out there.

Not so much impressed with Holik tonight. He’s lucky he didn’t get an interference call on that “let me just lay here on this guy in the crease move”, and then he lets him up and just stands there while he scores a goal. Not solid Bobby. Do something to get the lead out, fast.

Not a lot of glaring mistakes tonight. Could have used better referees ;) , a bit more energy in the 2nd, but otherwise I like where this team is headed.

But can anyone tell me why our PK is more effective at creating scoring chances than our PP? (Save that 5 on 3 in the third when we scored, finally). If I had to find something wrong, I guess that’d be it.

We are a .500 hockey team. Who would have thought THAT in October?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I’ll be away from blogland until the weekend. Don’t forget, Friday’s game is free Thrashers Blanket night. Snag me one if you go! :)

Great Opportunity Against the Dolts

Posted by talkingthrash on November 19, 2007

The Thrashers play tonight in Blueland against our most beloved* rivals, the Tampa Bay Lightning. The lineup is the same as the one from Friday that shutout Carolina. Hedberg will in net again, and everything else is the same (no McCarthy!).
The Lightning have two of the league’s best scorers in Vinny Propsal and Vincent Lecavlier. The Thrashers counter with Ilya ‘MVP’ Kovalchuk, and the suddenly hot Marian Hossa. Look for a shootout that is decided in the third.

Now to the opportunity in tonight’s game. This is the 20th game of the season. If I had told any Thrashers fan after the 6-games-that-shall-not-be-named that the team would have a chance to be at .500 only 14 games later, no one would believe it. Yet here we are. There also is the chance that when you wake up tomorrow morning, the Thrashers could be in the top 8 in the East and in playoff position. Not bad at all.

Like the Florida game last week, I don’t expect tonight’s game to be crowded. But also like last week, I expect Blueland to be rocking. Come out, be loud, and support the team in their quest for .500.

*”Beloved” probably isn’t a good description of the rivalry.

Playoff Promise for Tampa Bay

Posted by talkingthrash on March 28, 2007

From the Tampa Tribune:

For anybody out there sitting on the fence trying to decide whether to plop down your hard-earned money to purchase Lightning playoff tickets, Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella has guaranteed your money will not be wasted.

“We are going to get in [to the postseason],” he said. “We’re just taking … we’re going around the block, I guess that’s the best way to put it. We are going to get there. You can write that, I don’t [care] what you write. It is a guarantee. We will get in.”

I seem to remember an Atlanta guarantee last year, and we all know how that turned it out. Hopefully this will end the same way…

Lightning vs. Capitals

Posted by talkingthrash on March 1, 2007

Ovechkin gets another chance for me to like him for a short period of time tonight. If he can just pull his team to victory over the Lightning, that would be great. Somewhat good news for Thrasher fans that the Lightning are beginning a 6 game road trip, their longest of the season so far. Lets hope they have a result nearly as bad or worse than the recent Thrashers’ road trip.

And the Ovechkin conceited quote of the day, when asked about recent trades Ovechkin replied, “I still think we have a great team. It doesn’t matter who we lost or who comes here.” (NHL.com preview). So in other words, as long as he is there, they will have a great team. He might not have meant it in that way, but having heard many Ovechkin quotes before, that is how I took that quote.

Pregame, vs. Tampa Bay, Feb. 22

PreviewGame Notes

After a very long and pretty bad (to put it kindly) road trip, the Thrashers come home to face the Tampa Bay Lightning. Both teams have 71 points, but the Bolts have an edge in fewer games played and more wins. Whoever wins tonight though will take the clear division lead.

The game should be a special teams battle. The Lightning have the 6th best power play in league which will go up against the Thrasher’s league-worst penalty kill. Tampa isn’t much better with a man down as they are the second worst team in the league.

Coming off his stellar performance against the Hurricanes on Tuesday, Johan Hedberg will start again tonight.

Call yourself a Thrasher’s fan? Then I expect you to be at the game tonight. This is an incredibly huge match up, and is the most important game so far this season. Wear something blue, come to the game, and be loud. The last time the Thrashers played the Bolts at home was the game where Jimmy Slater scored with 8 seconds left for the win. I remember how loud that game was, and the chants at the end of the game seemed to draw that goal from nowhere. I hope that it is that loud again tonight.
