Deadline Success

Posted by talkingthrash on March 14, 2007

From Pierre Lebrun:

Trade deadline deals are often overrated for their actual impact on a team’s performance.

Don’t try selling that theory to the red-hot Atlanta Thrashers, who have gone 6-1-0 since the blockbuster acquisition of centre Keith Tkachuk. “If we had a crystal ball, I don’t think we could have predicted any better,” Thrashers GM Don Waddell said Wednesday.

Waddell credits Tkachuk for quickly finding a way to mesh with Kovalchuk.

“Ilya Kovalchuk is a great player. He’s not the easiest guy to play with because you got to get him the puck, he likes to shoot the puck,” said Waddell. “Well Keith has found a way to play with him and have success with him.”

Tkachuk, 34, says he’s having a blast. After a couple of losing seasons in St. Louis, spring time will mean something again for him.

“It feels great, it really does,” he said. “It was a no-brainer to get traded here, to waive my no-trade clause and come here and play. It’s an exciting time of the year and I haven’t had that in a couple of years.

“You want to go in the playoffs playing your best hockey,” added Tkachuk. “I think we’re doing that right now, and I know we’ve got another level to go at.”

Trade Deadline Success / DiPietro Hurt

Posted by talkingthrash on March 14, 2007

James Mirtle took a look at how every team has done since the deadline. The Thrashers come in at number 3, with a 5-1-0 record. Only Colorado (4-0-1) and Anaheim (5-0-1) have better records.

Everyone knew that Ryan Smyth leaving Edmonton would hurt the team a lot, but listen to this: they have been the worst team since the deadline, losing all 6 games played.

In tonight’s game against Montreal, NY Islanders’ netminder Rick DiPietro was hit in the head by Steve Begin. DiPeitro came out of the crease to clear a puck, and had to dive to beat Begin to it. Begin’s skate hit DiPietro in the side of head. Remember Mike Dunham? Looks like he will be playing for the ‘Duhs for a few games.

Posted by talkingthrash on February 26, 2007

To mark the occassion, I feel the need to steal a movie quote:

What do you like better, Christmas or Trade Deadline?
Yes. The answer would be, um, Trade Deadline?
Bingo!

It really is a holiday. And to mark the occassion, Patrick and/or I will be posting on breaking trades, and will talk about any moves the Thrashers make as quickly as they break.

Also check out The Falconer because I know he will have great analysis and breaking news.
